Information in this knowledgebase article applies to the following versions of:

• Keil MDK 4.23 and older
• PK51 9.06 and older
• PK166 7.07 and older
• DK251 5.08 and older
• µVision versions older than 4.50

SYMPTOM

Older versions of the Keil tools act strange when using Windows 8.x or Windows 10.

The Keil tools either do not start or behave strangely.

CAUSE

Windows 8 was released in October 2012, and Windows 10 in July 2015.

Before releasing a Keil µVision update, we test that update against the current Window OS of the time.

Keil Mdk

Versions of Keil µVision released after those Windows' release dates were tested with no reported issues.

Versions of Keil µVision from before those Windows' release dates were not tested for full compatibility.

Note:

• Any µVision version older than 4.50 is not recommended for use with Windows 8x or Windows 10.

RESOLUTION

Older versions of the Keil tools may act odd, e.g. not start or may behave strangely, if used on a Windows OS different than the ones Keil Support initially tested with.

To resolve these strange issues, there are three possible solutions:

1. Update to a Keil version released after 2012 or 2015.
   To see what versions of the tools a Product Serial Number (PSN) will work for, please go to www.keil.com/demo.
   Below the Maintenance Status and Previous Versions heading, in the teal box, paste in a Product Serial Number (PSN) or License ID Code (LIC) and press enter - a list of versions appears.
   The non-greyed out links are versions you are entitled to download i.e. versions released within the Product's (PSN's) support period.
2. Run older versions of Keil on Windows 7.
   Note, Windows 7 was released in October 2009 (and is no more supported by Microsoft since 2013).
3. Experiment with Windows Compatibility Mode Settings
   In Windows 8/10, use Windows compatibility mode (see link below) in combination with older Keil µVision versions.
